WMBPA General Meeting Minutes - April 21, 2010

Shelly Burghoffer called the meeting to order at 7:35pm. A copy of the March minutes will be passed around until Dr Mac arrives and can make copies. Will have a motion to accept later in the meeting.

Thank Yous – Kathy Nardiello – trip treasurer (100% payment was received); Bill and Donna Genader – getting truck with equipment to Florida and back; Barb Edwards and Alena Albar – Market Day; Rufino Hilario – website; Ginny Cibenko – Avon fundraiser; Dr. Mac and staff – great trip; Angela Vanderbeek – trip nurse

Recent events - Congratulations to Indoor Guard and Indoor Percussion on final weekend of performances. All-District Arts Festival – even 5th and 6th graders were great. School budget failed. Hope music program does not suffer.

Upcoming events - Nominations for Executive Board– Kathy Nardiello has expressed an interest in the position of recording secretary. We will vote at the May meeting. Senior Scholarship applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 23 or given to Dr Mac by Friday. Tammy Chuprevich is the committee chairperson. The Spring Concert is May 20. Need to decide if seniors should receive fresh flowers or use silk flowers from Senior Night.

The band banquet will be held at the Brownstone June 1 from 6:30 to 10:30. Marching band students are paid for by the band parents. Parents and other guests must pay. Replies should be mailed to Donna Kachler. No alcohol is allowed as this is a school event. Students must march in the Memorial Day Parade to attend the banquet. We will be in the room upstairs – there is an elevator for those who need it. There is valet parking – remind your students who drive themselves about a tip. If you have pictures to contribute, please give them to Donna Kachler or Barb Edwards. If you have Disney pictures, please post them or print them. Would like pictures of Seniors from freshman year and senior year. Donna needs addresses.

A parent asked if Championship orders had come in. Some have but others are still missing. Need to ask Dr. Mac.

Barbara Edwards gave Dr. Mac a CD with pictures from Senior Night (which Donna Kachler now has).

Hubbub Photo memory books can be created online at hubbub.com. Barbara Edwards is planning to create a sample book but needs pictures. Donna Genader made a disk of the pictures she took.

Other upcoming dates to remember – June 12 – Parade in Wanaque for the 100th Anniversary of the fire dept. Uniform return will be immediately after. Wash and return raincoats early. Pipers and drummers need uniforms for graduation so return will be after that. Someone asked if the parade was mandatory. We need to ask Dr. Mac. June 14 – band physicals; May 18 – next band parent meeting (this night may be dress rehearsal for concert also); June 22 – graduation; June 23 – last day of school.

Someone asked if 8th graders can start putting Market Day profits towards band accounts? Probably but not until June market day.

Band parents may need to pay for more next year such as competitions and away games due to budget cuts. Coach buses are about $800 but not sure of cost for school buses.

Volunteer forms will be out at the next meeting. Start thinking about where you can help.

Dr. McLaughlin’s report – Band parents will need to become even more active and step up our involvement to protect our music program. “The Beast” (our equipment truck) needs replacement. Dr. Mac and Mr. Calabrese have found a few possibilities. Special thank you to Bill Genader and Angela Vanderbeek for all their help during the Disney trip. It was nice to see so many people along the parade route. Many people complimented Dr. Mac on the concert and on student behavior throughout the trip. Indoor percussion and guard did very well at weekend performances. Guard made semi-final round at world competition in Ohio. Jazz band will perform at the community center and Camp Hope. Mr. Vallies will not be back next year (not budget related); Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Piaccone may not be able to stay due to budget cuts. Board has discussed cutting all supervisors as well. Upcoming music dept. dates – Friday (April 23) – An Evening of Jazz Choir Concert; May 13 – Spring Choir concert; May 20 – Spring Band Concert (would be nice to sell out laptop raffle tickets to help with fundraising); May 26 – Jazz Band at Bubbling Springs; May 31 – Memorial Day parade (Andrew Turek, a band member, made the benches at Memorial Park as Eagle Scout project); June 11 – Cabaret Night; June 12 – Parade for 100th anniversary of Wanaque Fire Dept. Not sure if we are participating at this time. Board may not pay for indoor percussion and guard uniforms next year. Dr. Mac will post code for photos from Disney on schoolnotes.com. Have 30 days after the event to purchase photos. We are still missing DVDs and patches from USSBA Championships. Having trouble contacting them.

Shelly thanked Dr. Mac and staff again for the Disney trip.

MAG 7 fireman was badly burned in a fire. Would like to send something to him from band parents and keep him in our prayers.

Motion to approve minutes from March meeting: Shari McCarten and Jim Todd. Minutes approved.

Fundraising ideas were discussed. TJ’s Pizza offers 15% on eat in and take out orders. Casino night and Tricky Tray were mentioned. Kathy Nardiello said that PAL often buys its prizes rather than relying solely on business contributions or parents. Combined Beefsteak and Tricky Tray was mentioned. Rotary does this. They have entertainment such as DJ. At Bloomingdale Firehouse, fire dept does the food and alcohol is included. Rotary charges $40 for dinner and $20 for Tricky Tray.

Final reminders – get Disney pictures to Barb; only 2 more Market days this year; seniors need to get scholarship applications back by the end of the week.

Motion to adjourn: Kathy Nardiello and Bill Genader. The meeting was adjourned at 8:35pm.
